    • Hashes of all log files delivered in that hour
    • The hash of the previous digest file (creating a chain)
    • Digital signature using AWS’s private key
  3. Validation Process: The SysOps admin runs:

    • SSE-S3 encryption protects data at rest but doesn’t prevent an authorized IAM user from modifying the file (the new version is simply re-encrypted).
    • Replication copies the current state—if a file is already tampered with, you replicate the tampered version.
  • Cost Impact: CRR incurs data transfer and storage costs without solving the stated problem.

  • Technical Reality: S3 access logs show:

“In a production environment at a fintech company, we enable Log File Integrity Validation on all CloudTrail trails by default via a Service Control Policy (SCP). We also:

  1. Automate Validation: Use a Lambda function triggered daily by EventBridge to run validate-logs for the past 24 hours and send results to a Slack channel via SNS.
  2. Combine with S3 Object Lock: Apply S3 Object Lock in Compliance Mode to the CloudTrail bucket to make log files immutable during the retention period (preventing even root users from deletion).
  3. Cross-Account Delivery: Send CloudTrail logs to a dedicated security account’s S3 bucket that application account admins cannot access.

However, digest file validation alone doesn’t prevent tampering—it only detects it. That’s why we layer it with S3 Object Lock and restrictive bucket policies. For the exam, though, Option B is the direct answer to the detection requirement.”
